On December 10, 2005, there was only one fisherman – Jim Savage – braving the freezing temperatures on Mosquito Lagoon. He noticed something strange among another fisherman’s net – a baby dolphin struggling to free herself from the netting. Then he called Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to rescue the dolphin. The group decided to call her Winter and take her back to the center to heal.

Winter was placed in a holding tank and determined to be two to three months old. She wasn’t used to eating solid food like fish yet, so the team had to put a feeding tube in her throat. Soon Winter learned how to eat from a bottle.

But there was some bad news. The rope wrapped around Winter’s tail when she was trapped had caused a lot of damage, and slowly her tail started to flake (剥落) off piece by piece. Eventually all that was left was a fleshy stump(残余部分) that would heal over time. But would the little dolphin be able to swim without her tail?

A dolphin’s strong tail is what gives it speed in the water. Though Winter did eventually start to swim on her own, her tail stump moved from side to side like a fish (dolphins’ tail move up and down). But it was amazing that Winter had taught herself an entirely original way to swim.

Besides she made lifelong friends with Panama, another rescued dolphin.

Eventually, word about disabled dolphin got it and Winter became pretty famous – everyone, disabled or not, could relate to the dolphin. But her trainers were getting worried, because moving her tail stump side to side had prevented her muscles from growing properly.

Along with a team of expert vets, trainers and researchers, Kevin – a dolphin lover and maker of false organs for people – developed a new tail for Winter, which had never been done before. Winter had to be retrained to use the new tail to swim properly, but with lots of hard work she did it!

Now Winter loves her new tail! She wears it for a few hours each day. And despite having so many fans come to see her, she seems to connect with each and everyone — from children with prostheses (假体) to disabled war persons in the army to a little girl who didn’t want to wear her hearing aid until she met Winter.

51.Why did the baby dolphin get injured?

A. She got hurt in the process of being rescued.

B. Jim Savage cut her in order to catch her.

C. She was bitten by unknown whales in the sea.

D. She was trapped and struggled in the net.

52.According to the text, Winter ______.

A. wasn’t able to swim without her tail

B. was too young to eat solid food

C. was very lonely without any friend

D. can help the girl to wear hearing aid

53.What made Winter’s trainers worried?

A. Too many visitors disturbed her normal life.

B. Winter would leave the center when healed.

C. She couldn’t adjust herself to the new tail designed for her.

D. Her new way to swim made her muscle grow improperly.

54.We can learn from the story that Winter is______.

A. brave and pessimistic

B. optimistic and lonely

C. inspiring and tough

D. friendly and energetic

Looking back at China’s holiday season cinema of the past few years, No Man’s Land (《无人区》) is undoubtedly of the experimental kind. It’s a fresh breeze in a season that’s usually dominated by more traditional comedies.

When it comes to a Chinese holiday film that is directed by Ning Hao and stars Xu Zheng, 41, and Huang Bo, 39, it’s easy to expect another no-brainer comedy, much like the three persons’ 2006 classic film Crazy Stone.

So it comes as a surprise that their latest project, No Man’s Land is nothing like what they’ve done before. In fact, there’s nothing comparable to it in the whole of Chinese cinema.

It’s a dark, Western-style exciting film full of black humor and anti-authoritarian (反独裁主义的) attitude — no wonder it was shelved for four years (it was first finished in June 2009) due to censorship issues(审查问题)(including too much negativity concerns such as that bad guys are described as heroes, and police as useless).

No Man’s Land tells the story of a lawyer named Pan Xiao (Xu Zheng), who drives to the deserts of China’s far west for a profitable case. On his way back, Pan is hunted down by a killer and unexpectedly meets a variety of characters, including a police officer, a woman, who takes off their clothes in a sexually exciting way in order to entertain people, and a group of persons who imports or exports without paying duties.

It’s a typical road movie and you can tell that Ning Hao gave his best to capture (俘获;夺得) the essential elements of one. Beautiful desert scenery with long, empty roads and falcons (猎鹰) flying above provide an authentic yet horrific background to what happens in the story.

Ning’s storytelling skills keep you on edge throughout most of the two hours, although at times the story is so complicated and detailed that you can’t help but wonder how it will wrap up.

In the centre of every road movie, however, is change and growth. That’s Xu Zheng’s role and clearly he’s done a great job. Despite appearances by co-star Huang Bo and Tao Hong, No Man’s Land is Xu’s one-man film. Everything happens, without exaggeration, in a no man’s land, and Xu transforms from an ambitious, gainful lawyer into a righteous man who gradually learns to care. He realizes that a man’s worth is the most valuable thing in life.

No Man’s Land reminds me of the 2007 Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Men, both in terms of its style and the story. But besides combining American westerns and modern black comedies, No Man’s Land smartly adds some Chinese fairy tales, making it one of a kind.

55.Why does the film No Man’s Land come as a surprise?

A. It isn’t well received even though directed by three famous actors.

B. It hasn’t been issued yet since 2009 because of its black humor.

C. It is filmed in the west of America with Chinese actors starring in it.

D. It has a quite different style from their former films.

56.According to the passage, the underlined phrase “keep you on edge” means that when watching the movie, the audience will feel _____.

A. excited and nervous                   B. bored and worried

C. regretted and angry                     D. puzzled and depressed

57.In the movie we can find that _____.

A. the story develops in an unusual way different from the other road movies

B. the main character remains a caring person after going through so much hardship

C. the story is set in the American west combined with some foreign cultures

D. it conveys that the most valuable thing in the world is a man’s worth instead of wealth

58.The article can be read in the section of ______________ in a newspaper.

A. School life                   B. News           C. Entertainment        D. Finance

With the release of the Annual Report on the Development of Chinese Returnees, concerns regarding the cost of studying abroad and the future benefits are rising among both students and parents.

According to the Chinese Ministry of Education, the number of Chinese students who studied abroad increased by 17.7 percent from 2011 to 2012. During the 2012/13 academic year, Chinese student enrollments (入学) in America increased by 21.4 percent in America. Similarly, the number of overseas returnees is rising rapidly, especially since 2008 when developed countries were greatly affected by the economic crisis. Various reasons contribute to this growing trend, with family issues believed to be the primary one. Most students are only children and tend to depend on their parents. Besides, the economic situation in China has strengthened returnees’ confidence in a future career at home.

Accompanying the increase in the number of students leaving and returning to China is the increase in the study abroad costs. In hot study abroad destinations like Boston, New York and Chicago, 200,000 yuan is needed annually for the tuition fee (学费). The report also reveals that students need another 80,000 to 100,000 yuan to cover living costs. The annual report reveals that it takes most overseas returnees at least five years to earn back their study abroad costs and 86 percent of returnees found a job within six months. However, their salary is not always satisfactory. Only 22.5 percent of returnees say their job offer meets their expectations.

Hao Jian, chief consultant at Zhilian Recruiting, thinks returnees’ high expectations for their salary are reasonable, but it’s wise to focus more on the job future than the money. “The advantages returnees have should not be underestimated. Though they may need five years to earn back the study abroad costs, with the right career plan, they’ll have a bright future,” he says.

His view is responded in the 2013 Survey Report on Overseas Returnees. The report, published by the Education International Cooperation Group (EIC Group), found that returnees’ salaries see a big increase in the long run. The average salary for a returnee with less than three years of work experience is 149,700 yuan a year. But returnees with more than seven years of experience can earn an average of 222,700 yuan a year. Employees with no overseas experience do not enjoy such rapid increases in their salary.

59.What’s the main reason for the increase of returnees?

A. The intention of depending on their families.

   B. The economic crisis in developed countries.

C. The current economic situation of China.

D. The high expense of studying abroad.

60.What can we infer from the Paragraph 3?

    A. It’s hard for all the returnees to find a satisfactory job.

    B. The more people go abroad, the higher tuition fee becomes.

    C. It costs students at least 280, 000 yuan to study abroad yearly.

D. Studying abroad may not be as rewarding as people think.

61.In Hao Jian’s opinion,        .

   A. there is no doubt that the returnees will have a bright future

B. 5 years is not too long for returnees to earn back their tuition fee

C. it’s not their current salary but the development of their job that matters

D. all the returnees have advantages to make their right career plans

62.The author’s attitude towards Chinese students’ studying abroad is ______.

   A. supportive        B. indifferent          C. reserved           D. negative

D

Record pollution levels that saw Shanghai suffering heavy smog on Friday caused flight cancellations, shortages of face masks and made some foreigners reconsider their long-term plans to stay in the city.

“It's terrible. I've never seen anything like this.”said Tom Duvalier of Chicago.“If you go down into the subway system, the same smell is in the air. It's everywhere so more people are wearing masks.”

The air quality index measured by the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center stood at 482 at 6 pm, while the US Consulate measured it at 503 at 2 pm — a reading “beyond the index”. Levels above 300 are considered “dangerous”.

It was the highest level of pollution recorded since Shanghai set up its measuring system last December, beating records set on Monday and Thursday, local media reported.

The smog in Shanghai follows severe pollution that affected Beijing and Harbin in Heilongjiang province in recent months. “The warm air in higher altitudes blocks the cold air in winter, so it's hard for the substance that makes air, water, soil etc dangerously dirty to diffuse.” said Qian Hua, director of the research institute of atmospheric environment under the Shanghai Academy of Environmental Sciences.

A British working in Shanghai said:“The pollution is the talk of the office. People are asking if it's cancerous, reminding everyone to wear their face masks and saying that babies should not be taken outside. People are saying that if it continues like this, they're not sure if they want to stay here long-term.”

Several businesses in the downtown area said“they are losing business.”“We’re usually full at this time,”said Kenny Shen, manager of a cafe, “but the place was almost empty at lunchtime.”

The severe pollution has caused fears that companies in the city will struggle to attract high-quality overseas talents. Some analysts feel it will prevent foreign companies from investing in the recently opened China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, where economic reforms are expected to be tested. While members leave for all sorts of reasons, we unavoidably hear nearly every time that one of the contributing reasons is the air pollution.

To reduce emissions (排放物), the city authorities issued a notice in the afternoon, stopping production at some industrial enterprises temporarily and at outdoor construction projects. It also removed one in three government cars from the roads. Shanghai is one of a handful of Chinese cities with more than 2 million cars.

The weather department forecast that the polluted things could be blown away when a wave of cold air from the north arrives on Sunday night.

63.What can we learn from the passage?

A. Some businesses in Shanghai made less money because of the heavy smog.

B. The air pollution in Shanghai will not be improved until Saturday.

C. Afraid of getting cancer, everyone was wearing masks even in the office.

D. Some factories were permanently shut down by the government.

64.It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A. the air quality indexes measured on Monday and Thursday were at normal levels

B. the companies in Shanghai will still appeal to overseas talents in spite of the pollution

C. the huge number of cars is the main cause of the serious air pollution in Shanghai

D. the number of foreign employees and the foreign investment may decline in Shanghai

65.Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “diffuse”?

A. accumulate         B. survive         C. Spread      D. multiply

66.What is the best title of the passage?

A. The pollution in Shanghai hit the highest record.

B. Shanghai’s smog gives foreign employees second thoughts.

C. The serious air pollution slowed Shanghai’s progress.

D. The heavy smog caused great inconvenience to people.

The Chang’e-3, named after a Chinese lunar goddess, is China’s first spacecraft to make a soft landing on the moon. It is composed of a lander and a moon rover (月球车) called “Yutu” (Jade Rabbit). It will travel for around 112 hours along the earth-moon transfer orbit (转移轨道) , while scientists adjust its orbit depending on the circumstances. The probe (探测器) is estimated to reach the 100-km high circular lunar orbit sometime on Friday and will land on the moon in mid December if everything goes to plan.

Chinese scientists have made technological breakthroughs for the Chang’e-3 task, which will be the most complicated and difficult task yet in China’s exploration of space. More than 80 percent of the technology adopted in the task is new. Many technologies will be used to ensure the probe makes a soft landing in low-gravity conditions. The rover will separate from the lander onto the exploration area around the landing site. Scientists have imitated the moon’s soil environment in a lab and found a place to test the rover, but Yutu will still face challenges on its real task including temperature differences of over 300 degrees Celsius on the moon. The lunar program will also make breakthroughs in remote controlling between the moon and Earth. High-precision observation and control technologies as well as lunar positioning will be used in the task, which includes experiments that would be extremely difficult to conduct on Earth’s surface.

Task process

The Chang’e-3 task is the second step of China’s lunar program which includes orbiting, landing and returning to Earth, following the successes of the Chang’e-2 tasks, which include plotting a high-resolution, full-coverage lunar map.

Task goals

To practice soft-landing on the moon, explore the moon’s surface, and create a space engineering system for lunar patrolling (巡逻).
To send back 3D images, infrared spectrums (红外光谱) and lunar soil analysis.

Soft Landing Process

  • 15km (distance calculated from probe to moons surface)
  • Between 15 km. and 2 km: Onboard instruments adjusts the probe’s vertical axis (垂直轴) to the moon’s surface.
  • Between 2 km. and 100m: The probe flies around for 100 seconds as it scans the landform below.
  • Between 100m and 4m: Reverse thrust (反推力) is engaged.
  • 4m: Engines are shut down and the probe moves downward to the surface.
  • 0m: Once landing is secured, the Yutu moon rover is released.

67.One of the Chang’e-3 tasks is to ______.

A. land on the moon and do some experiments

B. circle the moon for around 112 hours along the earth-moon transfer orbit

C. take back to earth some lunar soil extremely difficult to find

D. return to China with a full-coverage lunar map

68.Yutu might meet with unexpected difficulties because______.

A. everything concerned goes against the plan

B. it takes on the most complicated task ever

C. more than 80 percent of the technology adopted in the task is new

D. the temperature differences on the moon are really too huge

69.This reading passage is to _____.

A. tell us about Chang’e-3, China’s first spacecraft

B. introduce to us the Chang’e-3 task in general

C. warn us of the difficulty in Chang’e-3 lunar trip

D. inform us of the landing process of Chang’e-3

70.It is predicted that _____.

A. Chang’e-3 journey will be fully successful

B. the probe will suffer a thorough failure

C. a return trip from the moon is due for the next step

D. China is closing its space program at the moon
